Mystery Rosy Slime on Secluded Tasmanian Beach Prompts Fears of Likely Phytoplankton Proliferation
Agencies in Tasmania are striving to determine a pink slime that has appeared on a secluded beach, with certain experts anxious it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Broad Appearance Along Coastline
The magenta-hued slime appeared along a portion of a southern bay about 60km south of Hobart. A comparable ooze has also been documented on areas of a nearby shore and a separate bay.
Specimens Taken for Testing
Examples have been collected and sent to the Environment Protection Authority for examination. A representative stated that "algal blooms are a natural event in reaction to variations in minerals, warmth, rainfall or illumination".
"These blooms are occasionally called red or pink tides because the proliferations can turn the water red," the spokesperson added. "Not all algal blooms are harmful, with many species serving as a primary source of energy for animals in the marine food web."
"The most common cause of crimson tides in these seas is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause glowing light shows at night."
Increasing Frequency Connected to Climate Change
Phytoplankton proliferations occur naturally but their rate has grown in recent years, partially due to climate change and environmental waste that combine to create food-loaded oceans ideal for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a phytoplankton species that normally act as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a bloom, there is a fast increase in their numbers that disturbs the healthy balance of ecosystems.
These occurrences have been compared to subsurface wildfires and can keep expanding as long as circumstances are favorable. In more extreme scenarios, sensitive marine ecosystems can be devastated as aquatic animals is destroyed or suffocated, providing more food for the outbreak.
Past Severe Event in a neighboring state
South Australia not long ago grappled with a devastating algae outbreak along its southern coastline after a string of oceanic warm spells, which spread across a vast area. The bloom resulted in swimmers with sore eyes and severe coughing and may have eliminated up to 250,000 marine animals across hundreds of species, according to government calculations.
Expert Analysis on the Current Event
An estuarine ecologist, who was involved in studying the onset of that algal bloom said, based on images of the Tasmanian outbreak, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a kind of dinoflagellate also known as "ocean glitter".
"We have seen many of these outbreaks around Tassie of late," she added.
The scientist explained the algae did not create toxins comparable to the type involved in the previous severe outbreak, but it does consume tiny creatures and "numerous fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were particularly vulnerable.
"Typically one notices a bloom of sea sparkle after a proliferation of something else, or for example a salmon or coral spawning event," she noted.
Appeals for Response and Community Health
A campaigner, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in the state, stated it looked like the potential proliferation had "increased notably" and indicated the salmon farming industry was the most likely culprit, pointing to comparable events elsewhere.
"Thus we needs to send a strong warning here, the officials and the regulators need to respond to this. We need to study the samples we've gathered and we need to notify the people here," she emphasized.
The scientist said she had anxieties for public safety after noticing a tingling sensation along her limbs and skin while being splashed with affected seawater.
Reports of Deceased Marine Life and Calls for Official Action
An environmental foundation has reported deceased sea creatures and dead sea cucumbers appearing on the coast, with a longtime environmental campaigner labeling the event as an "natural disaster" and calling on the government head to inspect and "lead the effort that government must be doing".
"Officials needs to know this is a disaster in the happening, economically as well as environmentally."

Talking with the media, the official said he was not aware of any relationships between the algal bloom and the aquaculture sector, saying laboratory analysis was required before judgments could be made.
